Food and Water

This project was completed during a residency called Artist at Pine Needles (see blog below) in the summer of 2011 with the Science Museum of Minnesota and The St. Croix Watershed Research Station. Food and Water consists of diptychs representing food, in the form of agricultural landscapes, and water, in the form of the St. Croix River. The natural world has long been celebrated in photography. Food and Water does this, while pointing to the direct human reliance on these two resources as well as to the ecologically fundamental connection between the agricultural landscape and the bodies of water that run through them. Some of the research being done at the St. Croix Watershed Research Station is focused around this connection, and the impact that production of certain crops, like corn, are having on the watershed. As the headwaters to a vast Mississippi river system, northern and central Minnesota play a vital role in how the relationship between food and water is realized as water flows south.
